Pilgrimage through Lent

Lent is the 40-day season (excluding Sundays) that prepares the Church for the celebration of Easter. It mirrors Jesus’ forty days of fasting in the wilderness, and Israel’s forty years of Pilgrimage in the wilderness, and invites us into a focused time of repentance, fasting, prayer, and renewal, and we journey toward the promised land of the New Heavens and the New Earth.

Timeframe

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday

Why the Church Observes Lent

The Church keeps Lent so that our lives might be re-centered on Christ.

  • To remember our mortality and our need for God

  • To repent—turning away from sin and turning toward God

  • To recenter our lives as a Pilgrim people, placing our hope in the resurrection as we journey, like Israel, to the promised land

It is a season of slowing down, of preparation and expectation as we fast and pray in longing expectation for Easter’s arrival and the far greater Easter of Christ’s return.

Our Pilgrimage to Easter

Lent is a journey, not a destination. Every act of repentance, fasting, and prayer is oriented toward Easter morning. For forty days, we are recentered as a pilgrim people, who live with eager expectation for the return of Christ Jesus and the Wedding Supper of the Lamb.
